As the oldest grandchild, I wanted to take the opportunity to share some of our favorite memories of Grandma. Three of my sisters and I were Grandma’s only grandkids for twelve years before any of the grandsons came along. To say us five girls were doted on would be an understatement. As were the boys when they were born.
Grandma had such a generous spirit. Her love language was definitely gift giving, and we were quite spoiled. When we were younger, we have fun memories of going with her to the mall to Build-A-Bear, shopping for clothes at JC Penny at the start of every school year, getting the latest Wii game or Scooby-Doo DVD. She loved gifting us Madame Alexander dolls for our birthdays. She took many of us to swim lessons for years and even paid for private lessons for those that needed a little more help than others. lol We always looked forward to girl's night when all the men attended the priesthood session as well as her Easter egg hunts. For a couple of years she held one for the adults too…they would go crazy for the golden egg because it had the big bucks in it. She sewed all the poodle skirts for our epic 8th ward roadshow hairspray performance that my mom directed. There were midnight excursions to Barnes & Noble for the newest Harry Potter book release, many nights spent on EBay looking for Disney pins, countless trips to Scofield, adventures to St. George to see the Broadway shows at Tuacahn (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the family fav) and of course our many family vacations to Disneyland made for a magical childhood.
Even when we were babies, Grandma and Grandpa were thinking ahead for us. They set up 529 savings accounts for each of us so that when we graduated high school, we had a good start to help with college tuition.
Grandma was an amazing cook and baker. Her freezer was always stuffed with food! For years we did weekly Sunday dinner at her house. She kept a candy drawer in her room stocked and there was always some sort of treat when we would get home from school. We will miss her many soups, casseroles, Congo bars, peanut butter fingers, and chocolate chip cookies. We will miss Thanksgiving dinner at her house, and the annual Seafood Feast every Christmas Eve. She loved Italian Village's salad with the Roquefort dressing and the Canadian bacon pineapple pizza bender. Her Nielsens frozen custard order was vanilla custard with almonds and hot fudge. She loved Ihop and the Original Pancake house, especially the Dutch apple pancake.
Daniel loved being grandma's birthday twin. He and Taylor will remember the many sleepovers and hanging out at grandmas house. Nash and Davis loved grandmas peanut butter chews and root beer floats. They will always remember grandma’s special Christmas Eve game and singing happy birthday with grandmas special birthday candle.
Grandma loved the HGTV channel, Cherry Coke Zero, cherry jam, tomato sandwiches and anything almond flavored. Most of all she loved her family and her Savior. We are so grateful for Grandma’s example of faith and devotion to the gospel. She loved the scriptures! For decades, she hosted a Tuesday afternoon scripture study group in her home with ladies from the neighborhood. She also had a passion for genealogy and spent hours at the kitchen counter doing family history work — until her eyesight sadly made it too difficult to continue.
Grandma was fiercely independent, and boy was she stubborn, but she would also do anything for her grandkids. lol We knew we were loved. Thanks for everything Grandma! We will miss you, but are happy you are free from your health struggles. We know we have an extra guardian angel in heaven to look after us. We love you Grandma!
