Call me a period piece fanatic, Anglophile or Jane'ite'...no question about it...I love period drama! I just love movies period but these movies I'm border line obsessed with...they are my ALL TIME FAVORITES. Not totally sure what it is about them but they just take me to my "happy place". I've enjoyed re watching several this summer. I recently discovered BBC's adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1850's novel North and South. OH MY GOODNESS....am in love with that show! Story line intriguing, acting is superb, gorgeous music...AND Richard Armitage as the Northern mill owner Mr. Thornton, pictured below, HELLO! His brooding good looks, deep voice, devotion to his mother & livelihood, love for Margaret Hale and overall character I believe has, in my opinion, placed him in the number one "period drama" leading man spot! With "Persuasion's" Captain Wentworth and P&P's Mr. Darcy in a close running for 2nd. ;)
I definitely have a top five but could easily go with a top 7 or 8. haha! I'm curious, Who is your favourite "Period Drama" Leading Man? Go ahead and vote, and then tell me who you voted for, I'm dy'in to know.

Wish I could have fit all the possibilities and more pictures on the survey... I'd be amiss not to mention Hugh Grant as the original Mr. Ferris and Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility (sigh) nor
the quirky Mr. Bingley, below from the 2005 Kierra Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen Pride & Prejudice..which btw is in the running for favorite ALL TIME movie ever! I keep a collection of favorite movie moments and this movie alone has three. Believe it or not, I prefer this version so much more than the 6 hr one with Collin Firth. (gasp!) I'm sure its the opposite for most P & P lovers. I love Collin Firth as an actor, he's one of my favorites, but I'm torn as to who plays the role of Mr. Darcy the best, he or Macfadyen. The latter seems to display a tich more emotion and passion, which is greatly appreciated. Overall, there is just something about the latest P & P that tugs at my heart. Mrs. Bennett in both is hysterical.... in more ways than one. I love her character and wonder if I will end up with poor nerves raising 5 girls like her. Ha!
Jonny Lee Miller in the latest version of BBC "Emma" pictured way up on top is my favorite Mr. Knightley out of the three adaptations of Emma that I've seen, but overall I prefer the Gweneth Paltrow version the best. AND....even Mr. Henry Tilney in Northanger Abbey has cracked my top 8.
I could go on and on about this topic....favorite "period piece" couple, leading lady, bad guy etc. but I'll stop myself.... other than just one more quick survey...What is your favourite "Period Piece" Movie? Do share and
then watch this clever Period Drama Montage. Love it! Quote of the week:
"Hallelujah! What is it about a guy in a top coat and hat? Yum!" by my ever so funny friend Brenda. Love that girl!
I can't seem to vote but for leading man, that's a tight race between Cpt. Wentworth (ever since we watched "Persuasion" with the Jane Austen club I am obsessed with it!) and of course, Mr. Darcy. Yum.
ReplyDeleteAh! I was so hoping that period was going to be all about the girl drama that you are surrounded with. Like when Jaren says to hang up a flag to warn him. Ha, Ha.
ReplyDeleteI loved "Sense & Sensibility", but it's been a long time since I've seen it. I think I'm going to have to rent some of these to watch while the kids are in school next week & come back to vote for the leading man! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard for the characters I created in my own mind when I read them, to compete with the actors who then play them. How can Hollywood keep up with your own visions?
ReplyDeleteBut this is coming from the girl who spread out wingtips on the lawn for lunch with ficticious heros back in "our" day.
Maybe I'm a nut. Maybe?
Alan Rickman, baby. Alan Rickman. Which reminds me - Ed's getting Truly Madly Deeply from the library for us - we need to watch it!
ReplyDeleteThat video seriously gave me goosebumps. I need to get a life.
